From our London-based studio and our outpost in Bangkok, SEAM Design provides independent architectural lighting design services to clients, architects and other design consultants located around the world. We take every project as a challenge and a new opportunity to innovate. We invest our energy and our thought process in a very horizontal sense and that helps us to open up our projects in ways that hopefully have us answering the right question. Lighting design goes beyond the distinction between functional lighting and ornamentation; it is about shaping human perception itself, creating atmosphere and defining focus.
E. S. - Light connects with people and connects with you and it is about entering into the narrative of a project I think. Stories last a lot longer than statements. One of the aspects that we think is really powerful when lighting enters the architecture is that it becomes part of that narrative and engages with people which allows it to take on new value.
A. S. - I think we take sustainability a step further which is to really look at the design decisions that we're making, not following trends but looking at the life of a design. It’s so important how we can bring and create value and then see how that becomes timeless.
E. S. - Lighting sustainability has a lot to do with making an environment that's positive for people and light has a big impact on our physiology and on how our brains work. The way in which light triggers a chemical response in our brains.
A. S. - We were able to work directly with the Flos product design department to customise some off-the-shelf products specifically for double-height spaces where you need that kind of performance and it’s so interesting to be able to develop these products with Flos and to meet the high demands of the client.
A. S. - When we say performance, it's being able to choose the angle, being able to choose the colour temperature, having parts that are easy to replace because in the end we are looking at a stage setting.
E. S. - Harrods was a very demanding client who wanted precision, quality and consistency from room to room and that’s something that Flos was always able to provide, reliably delivering the kind of quality and performance that we needed. It was a real pleasure to work with Flos because we are able to go back to them for these small tweaks from room to room.
A. S. - Flos worked with us very closely to find a way to have both that small size and a really well performing spotlight, so we were able to combine the architectural details and the spot model together to create these beautiful environments specifically for the luxury room at Harrods.
A. S. - What's interesting about Super Line and how it has evolved as a product is that its origins are in the workplace environment but the new finishes have allowed it to crossover into the hospitality sector.
E. S. - I think having an up and down distribution allows that fitting to play very well in the domestic environment where at times you really just want a very direct light over the task and other times you just want a softer atmosphere in your home.
A.S. - Also in terms of how we want to use Super Line in the domestic environment, I myself am an amateur chef, I love cooking and I like to have a really high-quality light so it’s probably one of the things I’ll want when we redo our kitchen.
